To Do's - Right before you Leave

If your e-mail package has a feature that automatically informs senders you are out of the office, do that.

Notify key people about your absence and expectations of e-mail and voicemail responses.

If your voicemail system has this feature, record an Extended Absence Greeting letting callers know what to expect.

If your phone system has this feature, leave your telephone forwarded to voicemail.

Review the meetings in your calendar, and take action to cancel, reschedule or delegate.

Water any personal plants. Arrange for watering if you will be gone over two weeks.

Arrange for someone to check your paper mail every couple of days to avoid filling up your mail bin.

Review any outstanding tasks or papers that need attention before you leave to take appropriate action.

Leave copy of Itinerary & phone numbers where you will be with your manager or co-worker

If your beeper/mobile phone will operate out-of-town, take them, otherwise, leave them with the person that is covering for you.

Take a copy of your company phone directory, beeper and mobile phone lists. – Keep this in your carry-on luggage.

Take other important business phone numbers

Company Calling card with its International Access Codes card (if going abroad).

Make sure you have your tickets (if ticketless, proper ID), passport and any Visas required!

Make sure you have cash, travelers checks, and/or credit cards with enough line of credit to get you through the trip (and a little more, just in case you trip gets extended).

Take any company building security card. They may work in other company locations.

Take some business cards (for people and for your luggage)

If you are taking a laptop, see "Getting your laptop travel-ready".
